Description

Third world farmer is a game that simulates some of the real-world mechanisms that cause and sustain poverty in third world countries. It’s an applied game (serious game) where you have to manage your farm and family. If all goes well, you’ll become rich but if all goes wrong (which eventually will happen) you lose everything, start accumulating debts and with crops dying of drought you will feel frustrated. If you have too much success, guerillas drop by and pay you a ‘visit’ and if things go down a ‘tradesman’ offers you to grow poppy flowers or opium.

It’s an old game but nonetheless gives an important view on managing and farming in a third world country. If you choose the right crop in the right time you do well, but if your investment is too big and suddenly all crops die it turns the wrong way quite fast.

  • It is a fun little game that amused me for a while which is more than I can say for a lot of serious games out there. The game is hard and unforgiving but you can certainly make it with some luck in the beginning. And the hard and random nature of the game is kind of the point I would say. The first time I played it I won and I felt like I was “good at the game” because I understood spread of risk and basic math but then I tried it twice more (to get a higher score) and both times I failed horribly. It goes to show that the small bits of luck I had in the beginning of the first game leveraged into a successful farm and the lesson I learned was that even if you make good decisions you can still have a failing farm and it is not necessarily your “fault” when you fail, which is I guess one of the lessons the game is trying to teach.

The large amounts of text and complexer issues and amount of choices might make the game hard for cognitively impaired gamers and the lack of sound feedback improbable to play for visually impaired gamers. The zoom functionality of the browser can be used to zoom in somewhat without any trouble and color isn’t needed to play the game. The game can be played with one arm and in theory in can be played with keyboard controls as all buttons are focusable; but it is definitely not optimized to be played with tabfocus alone and you might run into some menu glitches. As there is no sound the game is perfectly playable for deaf gamers and there is nothing in the game that might cause a epileptic shock.
