Description

Hive is originally a tabletop board game designed by John Yianni in 2001 and published by Gen42. The team from BlueLine Game Studios has created a computer game from this award-winning board game. The game can be bought via Steam. It is an abstract strategy turn-based game for two players with different hexagonal shaped pieces. You use these pieces to create the hive. The pieces have different insects illustrated on them and every insect has its own movement characteristics. The main goal of the game is to “capture” the opponents queen bee by completely surrounding it with your own pieces.

  • It is always cool to have a computer version of an original tabletop game. It takes up less space and gives you the opportunity to play against players from all over the world. This game has a nice semi-cartoonish graphical style which gives it an appealing look. The controls are easy since you only have to use the mouse, only the right mouse click function does not work so well on the trackpad of my macbook pro (as stated above). Only the key flaw in this game is that there is not tutorial. I am completely new to this board game (had never heard of it before), so i had a hard time figuring out what all the bugs’ moves are. I had to read the entire instructions to understand what the game is all about. It is very clear to me that the game has been developed for the people who already have been playing this board game for a while, but for me (as a new player) a tutorial would come in handy. The game is accessible for a lot of different disabilities which is great!
