Hive is originally a tabletop board game designed by John Yianni in 2001 and published by Gen42. The team from BlueLine Game Studios has created a computer game from this award-winning board game. The game can be bought via Steam. It is an abstract strategy turn-based game for two players with different hexagonal shaped pieces. You use these pieces to create the hive. The pieces have different insects illustrated on them and every insect has its own movement characteristics. The main goal of the game is to “capture” the opponents queen bee by completely surrounding it with your own pieces.

How to play Hive
It is a turn based game and every turn you have two options. You can place a new piece on the playing field or you can move a piece that is already in the game. When you start the game you have 3 turns to place some different pieces and during your fourth turn you have to place your queen bee. By placing your pieces strategically you can start surrounding your opponents queen bee. The computer version has a few different gameplay’s. You can play versus the computer, online and with the pass and play mode you can play with two persons on one computer.
If you have a slight visual disability you might be able to play the game well. The pieces in the game are easy to recognize and the pictures of the bugs are pretty clear. When you are completely blind the game can be hard to play. I tried to play it with text-to-speech on the mac OS X 10.10 but i could not get it to work properly. Also, if you can’t see what is happening in the game field it will be hard to come up with a good strategy or even lay down some pieces.
The audio in the game has a minor role. Without the audio you can play this game just as good as with audio.
The game can completely be controlled with just the mouse. But I tried to play it with the trackpad on my macbook and it does not respond correctly to the use of the right mouse-click (on trackpad you can tap with two fingers or press CTRL+click (or tap)). The right mouse button is used for deselecting the piece or action you selected. The CTRL+click function does not work and tapping with two fingers does not work either. You have to tap with to fingers, and than click to make the action work.
This game is pretty hard to play. It has a lot of rules for every different piece. There is no tutorial at the start of this game so you have to read the complete manual in order to understand what every piece can do. There are 5 different difficulties to choose from, so if this is your first time you could start with easiest one called “brood”.
