Orcs Must die Unchained is the latest addition to the series making it a trilogy. Currently in open béta, the game is a third person strategy game where you fight off hordes of enemies by placing traps and finishing off the rest with your hero. This might sound like orcs must die 1 and 2 but this one is different. In OMD unchained they will try to take on the Moba genre. They added a new game mode called Siege where the games changes from PvE to PVP. Which begs the question, will this just be another MOBA or will this one be different?
The goal of this game is to prevent the ever spawning enemies from reaching your core. To defend your core you play as a hero. This hero can build traps and also has some spells and other damaging mechanics. Monsters spawn from fixed points, getting stronger after each wave. There are a lot of different types of traps, some create blockades to funnel enemies to a spot where you have a lot of traps which do damage. Traps can also slow, distract and even throw them back. When a minions dies it awards some money. Every time an enemy takes damage from a different source it multiplies the award from killing it. This way you can increase your income and build better defences. It sounds easy but is hard to master.
There a few different champions you can pick for free every week. But to own them you need to spend gold which only can be gained by spending real money. A secondary currency is very common in the MOBA genre as a way to make money on a game that is free. It gives more depth to the game but for the game to succeed if should be fun to play without spending any money!
In the first two OMD games you unlocked traps and heroes as you progressed through the game. Now, you earn small amounts materials and skulls for each game you play. These materials can eventually be turned into traps. This works the same way for pretty much everything in the game. This makes the options at the start very limited and the amount of time played will be a big factor And whether you can unlock the things you want or not. This makes making the right choice more important. Whether it’s for a new trap, hero or spell. You want the best bang or your buck. This opens the game up to people only picking and playing a small portion of traps, heroes and spells because these are the strongest. This will cause a generic meta game which will be hard to fix. You can just nerf everything but all the players who spend their hard earned resources on a trap that used to be good. won’t be happy.

How to play Orcs Must Die Unchained
You play the game from a third person perspective. You move the character with wasd and for the selection of traps and weapons you use the numbers on top of your keyboard. You build traps with your mouse button which also lets you shoot when you have a weapon selected. The movements are pretty basic but don’t seem to suit the use of a controller. I did not play the Steam version of this game so unfortunately I couldn’t use the steam controller.
Though this game can not be played if you are blind they did try their best for other visual disabilities. They have three settings for people who are colourblind and you can also adjust the contrast a bit. You can only change these settings when you are in the game, not in the client.
This game can be played perfectly well with a hearing disability. The communication between players is via text en there are no audi queues you need to react to. Each sound that has a meaning also has a visual component.
I played the game with keyboard and mouse and the movement and shooting is just like every other game. The exception is the use of almost all of the number keys. They it looks like now I don’t think it will translate well to a controller because you need ten button to select traps and weapons alone. The game will also be available on steam so testing it out with the steam controller might clear this up.
The learning curve at the start of the game is pretty low. Just build trap, shoot and defend. As the game progresses the game becomes more difficult. The main cause of this are the traps. You start with a limited amount of options and it’s pretty unclear how well each traps performs and what combination of traps works best. Besides this there is also the PVP part of the game that leaves a lot of things unclear after playing the tutorial. The positive part is that the tutorials can be reset in the game menu.
